On being perfect

Linkedin Post

I recently learned a valuable lesson from Seth Godin’s blog post, “The opposite of ‘perfect’”.

The opposite of perfect is to meet spec.

Most lawyers I know have their own standards for how work should be done.  What one person considers a standard might look different to someone else based on their abilities and perspectives.

I don’t think everything must be perfect every time. However, I believe it’s unacceptable for work to contain avoidable errors that could have been caught with a second review by the draftsperson, if time permits.

It’s difficult to determine a universal standard of perfection.

Being ‘perfect’ is hard. I’m not sure perfect by whose standards.

When working in a team, instead of chasing an elusive notion of perfection, it’s more effective to define the spec clearly and work together to meet the spec.

This approach is far more satisfying than attempting to fulfil a subjective standard of perfection.
